The 82,558 number given for the population in this article is actually the number of deaf and hard-of-hearing population in Taiwan given by the Ministry of the Interior in 2001. There is no guarantee that this corresponds to the number of people who sign Taiwanese Sign Language. Any thoughts on what to do about this discrepancy?
I hope to add information about the syntax and morphology of TSL at some point.
Any additional description of dialectal differences would be great. Huteson (2003) says that Tainan school TSL was based off of Osaka dialect of JSL while Taipei school TSL was based off of the Tokyo dialect. I only have limited experience around Taichung which was very mixed. It would be great to elucidate the main differences.
Is there any information about sign language users in the Pescadores, Matzu or Quemoy? Do they use TSL? -- WilliamDParker 09:51, 2006 September 6
