My name is Andrew Southwold and I'm his 28 year old grandson by his eldest son. The man's life is an unbelievable story. His experiences in the First World War may have inspired much of his writing, but they also cast long shadows over the rest of his life.
My aunt has written an excellent biography of him, that has never been published. If anyone is interested in his work and would like to read about his life and his romance with his wife, just let me know.
The reason for his name change is partly a reaection to his father as stated. It went further than that, though. His family had been boatwrights in Southwold, but his father was forced by alcoholism to work in Chatham Dockyards, a real step down. Southwold was where the young Stephen would go on holidays and stay with his aunts. A more prosaic reason is that Critten sounded both like 'Crippen' and 'cretin.' A version of this can be found in Bredon and Sons, although there is a lot of fondness shown for the father in it.
During the First World War, poetry and prose of his appeared in the English Review, which can be found on archive.org.
Andrew - I am interested in his work and would be very interested to know more about his life etc. can you contact me - psmcgrane@yahoo.co.uk —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grindlymac ( talk • contribs) 13:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
