I believe this page should redirect to Soviet Union, as it's clearly the primary topic. None of the other entries at Soviet (disambiguation) are quite as notable as a former world power. – Schmloof ( talk · contribs) 09:33, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
If I have a look at the Merriam-Webster it doesn't document soviet as referring to a country, soviet is said to mean "an elected governmental council in a Communist country". There is separate meaning in plural, but this doesn't change much. I personally think this redirect is utterly uneducated, thinking that the references to soviet mean the country as such and not its system of rule. As a compromise I offer to change the redirect to Soviet (council)#Soviet_Union. -- 90.191.166.161 ( talk) 21:40, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
That sounds good. 22:12, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
I think redirecting to halfway through a page on another topic is just ridiculous when you have a proper article to redirect to. I think it should redirect to either Soviet Union or Soviet (council), and I'm biased towards Soviet (council) since of course that's what I was searching for, if I wanted to know about the Soviet Union I would have typed it into the search box. Redirecting to halfway through a page causes the link to the disambiguation page to not be visible, and that link is essential if people are going to find what they are looking for. In fact, it really needs a {{ Redirect}} at the top of the target, whatever the target is. -- Tim Starling ( talk) 22:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Merriam-Webster may not include "Soviet" as an adjective, but the Oxford English Dictionary certainly does. "Soviet, n. and adj." Under "B. Adj", sense 1 is "Of, relating to, or having, a system of government based on soviets" (first usage 1918) and sense 2 is "Of, relating to, under the influence of, or living in the U.S.S.R." (first usage being 1920). Pam D 19:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
The purpose of a redirect is to help readers find what they are looking for. I believe that the vast majority of people will be better served if Soviet reverts to being a redirect to Soviet Union. See discussion currently going on at Talk:Soviet_(disambiguation)#Suggested_move. For the moment I'm going to revert the redirect, as I think the 4,500-5000 links within Wikipedia are overwhelmingly intended for that target. Pam D 14:29, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
Shouldn't this page redirect to Soviet people, given that Soviet was the demonym of citizens of the Soviet Union? ( 24.205.83.199 ( talk) 03:10, 12 January 2018 (UTC))
