I have started the route 38 page again. but need some input from Arriva436 & Editor4807.
Gratefully Needed,
-- Iveco 59-12 ( talk) 16:04, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
I've been thinking about getting photos of buses on the most "notable" section of their routes to illustrate the infoboxes on the articles. At the moment, some just show buses, which could effectively be anywhere. I've included all routes, even if they don't have an article.
Any other ideas? Arriva436 talk/ contribs 19:03, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Just having a look at the Southern Vectis Blog, some of these locations could be subject to change as routes 10 and 11 go!! and route 8 gets extended to Yaverland and Bembridge... Editor5807 speak 18:24, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
As you may have noticed, I have just archived the first bit of the talk page, to Talk:Southern Vectis/Archive 1. This is because it was getting quite big and I wish to add further things in a minute. As I have used the "cut and paste" method, the new page won't be on your watchlists, so regular editors may want to add it to their list, as archive pages can be open to vandalism. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 10:59, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
I have updated most of the things for the services changes on Sunday. I know I started a bit early, but there's lots to do. Anyway, SV themselvs have updated their site to reflect the new routes. Some of the things I have done:
I think that's it, and to help with further updates, I am about to create this subpage detailing everything that may need to be changed at each service change. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 21:10, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
I have started discussions at both
Talk:Southern Vectis route 10 and
Talk:Southern Vectis route 11 to discuss what areas of the route need photographing before they are withdrawn. If anyone feels anything else should be included please feel free to add it and I will try to include it when I take the photos. I also only realised a few days ago when Southern Vectis announced full details of the changes on their website that both routes 14 and 16 would be going too. Anyway as they don't have their own articles I have listed any photos that may need to be taken below.
route 14
route 16
Anyway theres just a few ideas, I only have a few free days set aside for this so I will try to get as much done as I can. Editor5807 speak 23:58, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
I've just proposed some changes to the Commons category, to sort it all out. You may wish to have a look at Commons:Category talk:Southern Vectis.
P.S. I've also changed the archive here, see thread above. 2009/10 should follow (probably put those together), and I'll have to move the bit in the 2008 archive which is actually from 2009 into the other one. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 19:55, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Ok, there's no way I'll have any time tomorrow to get any more photos so I'll just say what I have managed. I'll upload them when I get the chance.

When I took my 'main' image of the bus on the Downs the display flashed and doesn't show anything. I have attempted getting a bus at the same angle but have been relatively unsuccessful. I have also tried taking the display showing Newport from other images but have never got it looking quite right. Once the photo has been uploaded anyone else feel free if you feel you can do it and re-upload it! Thanks, Editor5807 speak 19:17, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
With all the talk of photographing the routes, updating the pages had completely slipped my mind (and there's a lot that needs doing!) I have used the talk subpage above as a guide but so far I have only got around to updating the main SV article (number of routes operated), List of Southern Vectis bus routes (deleting old routes and adding details of extended routes e.g. route 8) and the Template:Isle of Wight bus routes (moving the 10, 11, 14 and 16 down to the 'former routes' section). So still a lot more to do!!
Also, something I wanted to discuss was the 'service' sections on the 10 and 11 route articles. Should these be kept or deleted? Former routes 12 and 15 don't have them and of course since the route is no longer in operation, then it's no longer a service they operate. Unless of course they should be kept for historical reasons, in which case the section title should probably be changed to something like 'past service'. Editor5807 speak 20:09, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Right, this could take a while. My trip (detailed on Editor5807's talk page) was succesful, and I got some bonus shots as well! Sadly, it was absoulytly freezing and being outside the whole day wasn't too good. My hands were in pain and my finger numb for a long while! I ended up coming over Southampton way and catching the 10 to Brading (to see the views - last time I did it it was pouring down) and then the 2 to Ryde to commence my plan...
Here is what I achieved.
I think that's it! Sadly the only Citros I saw out on Saturday were 451, 454, 456 and 480. The rest seemed to be deckers, so no shot of 457 for my personal collection! Luckily Editor5807 managed one. However, we will now have some extensive coverage of 309 and 311! I travelled on 311 three times, and took photos of it in 5 (6) different places - all of which had the same driver (bar the last), so just a touch embarrasing! At least he let me on without seeing my ticket on the last trip, my hands were frozen. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 22:55, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
I've "un"-cropped some of File:Southern Vectis 301.JPG, so show the surroundings better. As a result, it's now small in the article's infobox. As much as I like the irony of having a bus on a route SV have abandoned as the first picture, I feel we should have a new, up-to-date image. So what image somewhere in Commons:Category:Southern Vectis is the nicest? Arriva436 talk/ contribs 23:11, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Anyway those are a few ideas, I'm sure there are other options as well. Editor5807 speak 17:41, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Go to http://www.tan.gov.uk/tanen/VOSA_SelfServiceOpBusRegSearch_New.asp . Fill the drop down box as "view all". Select Western Traffic Area. Change the date to 23rd Feb. And press select (the one immediately under the check boxes)...
...and see what turns up...
I don't think there's any point doing anything Wikipedia-wise now, but it's still interesting!
Also, the 8 was re-registered on 24th Feb, and some timing changes to the 7 come up on 19th Feb. Wightbus also come up under 26th Feb for route 20. Take everything with a pinch of salt though, VOSA are notorious for having errors in these online bus route registration details. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 19:55, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, I now know what the changes are. Sadly they're obviously not in the public domain yet so I can't just give out all of the details here. I will say though that the hunch about the X10 and X11 being linked to coaches is correct, as is the guess that the Binstead and Haylands shuttle is being amended. I also know about the changes to the standard services across the network. And they're not good! Arriva436 talk/ contribs 18:58, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
OK, the timetables have now been put up on Traveline South East. If you go to http://www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk/ , then timetable search ("find a timetable") and enter Southern Vectis as the operator, all the services come up. As they're now in the public domain, I can now say the changes.
and now the bad...
Arriva436 talk/ contribs 20:07, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Bustival the second is apparently due to be held on 18 April. It came as a surprise to me as I had no idea that they were doing it again. There is an entrance fee this time though, so they should make a bit of money! The IOW Steam Railway site has a mention... http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/special-events/details/8-bustival-vintage-vehicle-cavalcade.html Arriva436 talk/ contribs 17:07, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
This is a good section, and very interesting. However, there is one thing I think might need to be adjusted. "In fact Southern Vectis now faces virtually no real competition to its services, as Wightbus, being council run, is restricted to running purely uncompetitive routes." I'm not sure this is the best wording, considering routes 3 and 16 do sort of compete, especially as reading comments on Ventnor Blog after it was announced the 16 was to be withdrawn, many people try and catch the 16 as it has much cheaper fares. Any ideas on what to write instead? Arriva436 talk/ contribs 16:13, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I notice the article has recently been changed stating that members of the public can use the school services, but Southern Vectis just discourage them not to through alternative branding etc. If someone more in the know could shed some more light on this it would be greatly appreciated. As far as I was aware (admitedly it was only through a friend, not a published source, Southern Vectis had given the Isle of Wight Council a total cost for providing school services under both a contract closed and open to the public. As the closed contract was much cheaper, that's the one the Isle of Wight Council went along with. Even at the school bus stops now it states that members of the public are not permitted to use the services. Any help on the issue would be great, Editor5807 speak 22:44, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
The "offending" material is now removed. Unfortunately we edit conflicted, but it wasn't too serious. Sadly I am very busy at the moment, which has seriously reduced the amount of time I can edit. I do still keep an eye out, and have watched you dramatically improve the article Whistler with expanded historical content, and various up-to-date stuff, as well as finding some good sources, so well done for that, it's excellent. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 21:34, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I have noticed that some new route articles have been created recently, for routes 25, 37 and 38. These routes are really not at all notable. At a push you might be able to source route 37 with previous detail about route 15, 4's withdrawal, and the taxibus service - but really it's only a local service around a housing estate and holds little interest. Similarly, there is nothing really noteworthy about the 38. The most interesting thing about it is that the evening service was recently withdrawn - hardly noteworthy. The article is only one line about the service.
Route 25's article is a bit better, but for such a limited service that has only just started, there is not a lot notable about it at all. Certainly no outside content to source it with. I don't want to do this as I realise people have put work into the articles, but I think there really are not notable. I think we jeopardise the more notable routes by having such bad articles for non-notable routes, I fear someone might come along and AfD all of them. I have left saying this for a few weeks now, but there have been no improvements to the articles.
I have therefore taken the following actions:
(Actually, I've just decided to redirect all of them.)
I hate to do this and revert people's work, but as I have said, none of the routes are notable in my opinion, and risk jeopardising the other articles if left as be. Hopefully others will agree with me, if not, I've only redirected them so it will be easy to get content back. Arriva436 talk/ contribs 09:33, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
All the route articles have apparently been deleted, which I find slightly surprising given the historic information and notability criteria mentioned in one or two of them. I can understand (and fully support) removing pointless pages that exist just because the route number does, but can anyone shed light on why the main route articles have gone too? I note that on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 March 28#Category:Circular bidirectional bus routes it was even mentioned that Route 7 probably was notable, although on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Southern Vectis route 2 there seemed no discussion of what was in the articles, just a general consensus that non-notable things should be deleted and notable things moved into the main article - which in the case of the 7 definitely did not happen based on Southern Vectis as it stands today...
