Moscow Olympics

The Woman's Hockey Tournament contained several teams from eastern Europe (including Czechoslovakia - who held Zimbabwe to a draw during the "round-robin" stage, if I remember correctly). India was also included in that competition. Zimbabwe actually managed to beat the 'favourites' - the USSR - who subsequently remarked that Zimbabwe had been "very lucky" !

It is perhaps misleading to imply that the Zimbabwean team was cobbled together in a great hurry. In a sense, that was true - but their team was built around the nucleus of a team which had earlier played under the name "Rhodesia".

I also remember the US embassy trying (unsuccessfully) to persuade Zimbabwe to join the boycott. DLMcN ( talk) 06:38, 8 March 2011 (UTC) DLMcN ( talk) 20:23, 13 March 2011 (UTC) reply
