I have upgraded this article from a bare stub to include a little more, largely drawn from NASA & HEASARC web sites and personal recollections from the 1976-1979 period when I was a post-doc at MIT/CSR. However I was mostly involved with HEAO 1, and did not really have a very complete or balanced view of the SAS 3 project, which was a beehive of exciting stuff at that time. I've tried to list some of the names of the more important players who made SAS 3 happen, but I have surely left out many important ones, and apologize to anyone I have neglected. I also have a woefully incomplete knowledge of SAS 3's scientific achievements and their implications, and hope others who were more involved can fill in and help balance the piece.
