Why is there no mention in this article of the similarity between the Silmarils and the
Sampo from the Finnish
Kalevala? It is well documented that the Kalevala was a huge influence on Tolkien and much has been said of the similarities between Túrin Turambar and Kullervo, but the obvious connection between the Silmarils and Sampo isn't mentioned anywhere. –

As you say, Tolkien scholars have long discussed the connections, and these are mentioned in several Middle-earth articles. I'll take a look at the scholarly literature again on this aspect.

I've added a bit of the scholarship on the question. It actually points up what a curious symbol a Silmaril is, full of holy light yet creating an unholy mess. Interesting, thank you.
