I'm requesting this be moved to the Official name according to both the US Coast Guard (who owns and maintains all active lights and is the inheritor of the US Lighthouse service which owned all of these lights at one point) and the US Forrest Service which owns the land that many of the lights stand on which is "Light" not "Lighthouse". The Tracey Elementary page at http://www.norwalk.k12.ct.us/tracey/lighthouses.htm claims that the name of the island had been "White Island" (not Smith) before being purchased in 1804 by Captain Sheffield of Stonington. Perhaps the progression of names was: "White Island" (1804), "Smith Island" (1826), "Sheffield Island" (1868). 67.86.73.252 ( talk) 01:28, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
