I've added a "meaning" for the Irish place name, but, given the context, "The Old one" looks a bit strange. I guess the town was named after the river (I've commented this out from the bracketed translation for the time being) but wonder was it meant ironically? Nice joke if it was. Anyone know? -- sony-youth pléigh 20:57, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
"Because of its size, the town is managed at a local government level by the Shannon Town Commission, as opposed to a Town Council or Urban District Council."
No, its administered by a Town Council just like every other town with its own local government, see [1]. This was not always the case, for a long time the council had to share authority with SFADCO which had essentially developed the town. [2] for details of the transfer. Neither Town Commissioners or Urban District Councils exist in Irish law any more following the Local Government Act 2001 -- Rdd 20:23, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
