Traffic and throughflow of people

If you ask Google Maps for a route from San Francisco to Los Angeles it recommends the I-5 in the Central Valley. But if you then drag the route across so it takes you the alternative way of U.S. 101 near the coast, it still wants to cross the mountains at Shandon to join up with the I-5. Is there therefore much traffic passing through this place? Is it a busy stopping off point for people voyaging through California, or a quiet backwater?
