"On April 2, 1992, Selena and Chris were married in Nueces County, Texas."
The movie has them eloping, but as I understand it they had a church wedding with her whole family there. I think someone who knows what happened should rewrite this. Suggestion: "On April 2, 1992, Selena and Chris were married in Nueces County, Texas, with their families and friends in attendance.[4]" Rissa, copy editor ( talk) 03:21, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
I've brought this issue up several times in the past few years. This article lacks critical information see here for my last attempt to expand the article and what the article lacks. This expansion needs wiling editors to contribute to end this long battle to expand this article to its fullest, at its current state the article is not up to the standards of WP:FA. I'm wiling to contribute and hope to begin sometime this weekend or next weekend. Best, .jona talk 18:03, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Selena's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

As per its most recent FAR and the outstanding tags, I have spent nearly a week on the article updating, adding and removing content, adding sources, etc., which I believe satisfies all issues that were brought up. If not, please add back or any other tags you feel as though the article has encountered since its recent edits. I am now done expanding the article, however, I will be working on the references and adding the books used as sources in the coming days. There are still several dead links that I'll try to replace or remove, if you can help with any of these issues please do so. If there are any other concerns please address them below here and not on my talk page so others can also help. Best, .jona talk 04:19, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

I disagree with the new disambiguation that @ NHRHS2010: just implemented on the article. Yes, Gomez is very popular among the younger generation but Selena is popular among the Hispanic generation and Gomez fans already know that she was named after Selena; the only communites who do not know who Selena was are non-Hispanics outside of the Americas. Gomez is known as Selena Gomez and not Selena (besides gossipy/tween magazines that name her by her first name like US Weekly, J14, TigerBeat, etc). The previous disambig template was fine the way it was. Best, jona (talk) 22:00, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

In the fourth paragraph of the article, beginning "Aside from music," I'd like to request the following changes:
1. Please change "Aside from music, Selena was active in her community and donated her time to civic causes. Coca-Cola named her their spokesperson in Texas, and Selena became a sex icon, despite her comments on being a role model for young women, which she was often criticized for wearing suggestive outfits." to "Aside from music, Selena was active in her community and donated her time to civic causes, and Coca-Cola named her their spokesperson in Texas. Selena became a sex icon, and she was often criticized for wearing suggestive outfits in light of her comments on being a role model for young women." for the purpose of a clearer organization of ideas. At the very least, change "women, which she was often criticized" to "women, for which she was often criticized."
2. Please change "after Quintanilla, Jr. raised concerns" to "after her father raised concerns." This is the first mention of him in this article, and currently it is not immediately apparent to whom is being referred. Making this change would also result in the first appearance of her father's name (in the first paragraph under "Life and career") more appropriately consisting of the name in its entirety.
3. Please insert a comma at the end of the phrase "shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar."
4. Please change "news of her death, and was compared to the death reactions of" to "news of her death, which was compared to the reactions accompanying the deaths of" in order to correct grammar and eliminate the odd-sounding phrase "death reactions."
5. Please change "Her posthumous crossover album, Dreaming of You (1995), debuted atop the Billboard 200, becoming the first Latin artist to accomplish" to "Her posthumous crossover album, Dreaming of You (1995), debuted atop the Billboard 200, making Selena the first Latin artist to accomplish" to resolve a grammatical issue.

Hey guys I love how Fiesta De La Flor is put into here but, in July 2015, M•A•C announced their Selena Quintanilla makeup collection that went viral. 2, days ago, they revealed the "Como La Flor" lipstick which will be included in Selena's Limited-edition mac makeup Collection that also went viral. In February 2015, a petition on change.org was created for MAC Cosmetics to create a Selena Makeup line. By July 2015, the petition received over 37,500 signatures. And when MAC saw the 37,000 signatures they announced the line! The mac + Selena makeup line will launch in October of this year. May someone add this information to Selena's posthumous honors? The information is easy to find several of articles have been published on this NoDoubt1995 ( talk) 23:47, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

In October 2016, MAC Cosmetics released a limited edition Selena collection. The makeup line was created with the help of Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla. The collection was inspired by her looks on and off the stage and the products are named after some of her most memorable songs. [1]
The article currently reads: "...Tejano music compositions; a male-dominated, Spanish-language genre[25] with German influences[26] of polka, jazz, and country music, popularized by Mexicans living in the United States..." It reads like it is saying that jazz and country are influenced by German. Presumably it just means that polka is. Probably referring to "german influences" at all is out of place since polka is itself german (eg, it could just as easily read "with African American influences of jazz, polka, and country music..."). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.12.245.132 ( talk) 22:16, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Presumably Selena was taken to hospital - there is no mention of this critical point. The statement that "After 50 minutes of surgery, the doctors realized that the damage to Selena's pierced artery was irreparable" is false and misleading. Doctors do not decide that damage is irreparable. They try to save an injured patient. The quote suggests that they decided that the damage could not be repaired and gave up. That is improbable. If it did happen, such an event would need to be referenced. 125.236.202.112 ( talk) 01:25, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

(page 185) and countless other pages find her works to resonate within the LGBT communityBut the citation note lists only page 185 in the references. Perhaps since Dr. Vargas' work is (as of now) the only source making this claim, the citation should list all relevant page numbers. There is also the paper Dr. Vargas published 10 years ago which contains much of the same research found in her book, and thus should be used as an additional reference for that claim here, in the Wikipedia article.—Spintendo Talk 03:13, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

Why does her last name, given in the first line of this article, have a hyphen? I mean, while it's not outside the realm of possibility for her name to actually include a hyphen, it seems unlikely for someone of Latino origin. The first paragraph states that « Billboard magazine named her the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade, while her posthumous collaboration with MAC cosmetics became the best-selling celebrity collection in cosmetics history» and is followed by reference [2], a listacle from Bustle about the best selling MAC Cosmetics celebrity collaborations of all time. The phrasing of the sentence implies that the Selena MAC collaboration was the best selling celebrity makeup collection of all time, although the tense makes it unclear whether or not it was at one point the best-selling or if it still holds that distinction. However, the reference included only states that it was the best selling celebrity collaboration for one particular make-up company (MAC Cosmetics). If this particular collaboration was, or still is, the all time best-selling of all cosmetics company/celebrity collaborations , then a reference should be included to reflect this, and if not then the article should clarify that it the collaboration was/is *MAC Cosmetics* best-selling celebrity collaboration.

Selena is listed under the category "American mezzo-sopranos" which I believe is how she was described in the liner notes for "Dreaming of You" but the Artistry section in this article states that she was a soprano with a source given. What was her correct vocal category? In the fourth paragraph of the lead the last sentence states, "As of 2015, Selena has sold over 65 million albums worldwide, making her the best-selling female artist in Latin music history." The source given is Billboard magazine. Yet how could Selena be the best-selling female artist in Latin music history if the biography for singer Shakira states that she sold 75 million copies meaning she has surpassed Selena in sales. (It is not possible that Shakira sold the ten million more than Selena after 2015 considering how the record industry is doing.) How can one Wikipedia article contradict another? By the way, I have nothing but respect for Selena and consider her to be one of the most influential women in U.S. history so don't take me writing this as being a troll. Can something be done about these contradictions? Thanks.

I know 60-65 million figures are widely known both in Spanish and English sources in her case, but seems inflated and probably are primary sources (by her record label or thanks to the vandalism in Wikipedia; e.g, from es.wiki). She has basically just a gap of 10 million to be consider one of the best-selling music artists and i'm not sure if her certifications are even close (I know she is huge both in USA and MEX, but i didn't see anything outside about certifications).
According to Chicago Tribune, her father said she sold 26 million before passed away and her record label started reporting 60 million at least since 2012. According to other sources, she sold 30 million ( Notimex) or 40 million. I'm aware, we have now "better sources" reporting her sales around 60-65 million but context matters (Don't forget that according to one source, 60 million was reported initially by her record label).
I could easily change that figure, but we don't need a possible misunderstandings, an edit war etc specially because this is a GA and I found more than one figure: 30 million, 40 million and even 26 million. My 2 cents, is change 60-65 million reports to 30/40 or even, I don't have problem with the 26 million if we base the certifications criteria.

I feel like she could of very well sold around 60 million records, according to Billboard, she sold 18 - 20 million albums in the 1990s alone, I feel like from the 2000s, the 2010s and now the 2020s she should of sold a lot of records, regarding the certifications in other countries, I only know the Selena Movie soundtrack is certified Gold in Hong Kong. Also the sales of her singles could support that she has sold around 60 million. As well as streaming. On Spotify alone she has over 1 billion streams which contributes to her sales. On Apple Music and iTunes, she’s been charting in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Which can also contribute to her sales. SelenaQueentanilla ( talk) 17:57, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

This article is about Selena so of course there is going to be background on her life, too. So it's not an awful article as it's written up the way an "about" article should be written. If you want to read on the circumstances on her passing away, then you would need to read an article written that focuses on only that and I don't know if anyone's written an article focusing on only her death on Wikipedia. I have been reverted twice for describing Selena as 'Mexican-American' in the lead. She sang Tejano music in Spanish, she identified as such, and she was referred to as such in many of her obituaries. Read the footnotes. She is described in the lead as "one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century." She won the Grammy for best Mexican-American album. She is also listed in the WP article List of Mexican Americans. Why would anyone revert her own self-description? American In Brazil ( talk) 20:23, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
I saw a couple of people say that Abraham Quintanilla denied that Marcella had Cherokee ancestry, although she was born on a reservation, he says that she’s Mexican American. It’s obviously Selena and her family is of Native American decent, judging from their brown complexion, eye shape, nose, etc. most Mexicans are Mestizo, but I could tell that Selena is more Indigenous than Spanish (making her indo-mestiza) it’s also rumored that she’s of Tiwa / Tigua Native American decent SelenaQueentanilla ( talk) 20:05, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Regarding the file image, its a free drawing and not a derivated work from any phortograph as I can see, in addition is one only ones we could use in all of her wikis since there are no free-file of her nowhere to be seen. There was actually a discussion I made on Wikidata for the addition of her image, but people did not cared about - [1] there was only an user saying the following *I said it before, the drawing is not good enough nor does it have good quality, and also, I agree that it is not representative. I understand that there is no other image available, but it is not mandatory to have one. I like the mural version better, but it doesn't have much quality either; I wouldn't use any.* this was Gusama Romero speaking in there.
The above ones are the only 2 free files for her. and the one I am proposing for addition is the following:
I also want to sy I was the one that uploaded that drawing work, but however with this, I also wnat to clarify I am not trying to imposed it. Certainly I think, checking at the other works, its the most representative file we could use for her on Wikis, and in a little case, add her here on her Wikipedia as well, without chaning her lead image on infobox obviously. In the other Wikis since the non-free file stuff is not well received, such as like in the Spanish one, it could be used as a current lead, while awaiting if in the future a free file one of her appears. The first file above has no color, and very little representation of Selena, it could be the drawing of any other random girl with a little asian look, and the graffiti one does not look like her either. The one I am proposing has also a little looking at her, but it has the Mexican-American representation on her behind, while also wearing her purple jumpsuit, and as you mentioned AJona, a kind of look on her face as how she did on her Amor Prohibido photoshoot. ¿What did you think? I await for your responses fellas:) TheBellaTwins1445 ( talk) 19:26, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

@ FMSky:, @ AJona1992:, Hi fellas I am reaching up to the two of you because I am dealing with a little problem regarding a sentence with Selena's article in spanish, which is also affecting the one on english. I am Mexican but I like to edit on both english and spanish versions of Wikipedia. There has been problem this days with some information I extracted from the english one to correct the murder section on her spanish article. An user called "Chico512" in there has made some points regarding a sentence on both of her Wikipedia pages, it is the following one; «Selena was dead on arrival at Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital. The attending emergency room physician decided to attempt to revive her.» He claims the source cited, which is the following one - [2], its not reliable, which I doubt. He in the other hand wants to put any of the following ones - [3] or [4] and changing the "she was dead" sentence to "she no longer had vital signs", which is something both of the articles mention, they are both on spanish but I'll translate you what it says about this the one of BBC; "Paramedic Richard Fredrickson was the first to treat her and discovered "a bullet hole in the upper right chest"; looking for vital signs he noted muscle "twitching" but no pulse or breathing." The Univision one says the following; "I examined the functions of the brain, but there was no activity. Her pupils were dilated, they did not respond to any stimulus. She did not breathe on her own; she had no vital signs," Carlos Valdez and defense attorney Douglas Tinker told prosecutors." So what shall we do? the cited source is reliable ? the "SelenaForever" page? or should we change this information regarding as if she was really dead, or she had no vital signs? Greetings fellas, I await for feedback to make the respective changes on both articles. By the way, he also claims the SelenaForver is used as plagiarism for the article since it seems it is just a "copy-paste" from what it says in there, to her Wikipedia page. From the article, "Stern played Selena's songs with gunshots in the background on his show." This is false. Stern never plays gunshots during Selena's songs. Fred Norris plays a gunshot sound effect during Eddie Murphy's "Yeah" song. The entire segment is on youtube has been for 15 years. I don't know why we have two secondary sources cited that make this false claim when we have the primary source contradicting it. 76.30.254.78 ( talk) 02:12, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Selena →
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez – Only in the most exceptional cases of universal familiarity across the English-speaking world should an article title consist only of a person's first name. I have personally never heard of this person, and I have no reason to think that she should lay unique claim to the name "Selena".

Why does her last name, given in the first line of this article, have a hyphen? I mean, while it's not outside the realm of possibility for her name to actually include a hyphen, it seems unlikely for someone of Latino origin. Normally her name would be "Selena Quintanilla Pérez". This is completely unrelated to the result, if any, of the move request above. Red Slash 20:27, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Birthplace on Wikipedia states Lake Jackson Texas. However Lake Jackson did not have a hospital in 1971, actually not until 1984. What was the Brazosport Memorial moved to Lake Jackson in 1984. In 1971 the hospital was located North of Freeport Texas in an unincorporated part of Brazoria County Texas called Precinct 9. I know this because I was born there in the same Hospital in 1967. My birth certificate states place of birth, Precinct 9 Brazoria County Texas. By the way I also knew AB and Selena as a child. Her father and my best friends father were co-owners of Papagayos the restaurant where she played as a child in Lake Jackson. I used to hang out at the resturant Cahendrick ( talk) 17:07, 28 May 2018 (UTC) how do I actually get this changed?
While settling in, Marcella was told by doctors that she had a tumor and it needed to be removed. Marcella and Quintanilla decided to get a second opinion before performing the removal. While visiting a second doctor, the couple were told that Marcella was pregnant. Marcella and Abraham were told that they were going to have another son and picked the name: Marc Antony (Quintanilla). But on April 16, 1971; Marcella and Abraham delivered a girl at Freeport Community Hospital. A woman who shared the room, suggested the name "Selena".[11] Cahendrick ( talk) 08:16, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

I know it may seem obvious to people who are familiar with her, but in keeping with how other articles handle individuals who are primarily known by their first name, the introduction should include the statement, "better known as Selena" or "best known as Selena". 50.66.121.20 ( talk) 04:19, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
