father in concentration camp

Why was his father in a concentration camp? Was he jewish, roma, communist, suspected to be gay? Has he talked about the reason? I'mjust curious really. If Benigi does have Jewish roots or Roma it would be worth having a mention in the article though.

Pope

Is there a reference for the Pope being called something impolite by Benigni? I can't find it anywhere online...-- 211.30.91.106 11:00, 25 October 2005 (UTC) reply

it wasn't unpolite, believe me...

It is true that the word "Wojtylaccio" means literally "bad Wojtyla", but in Tuscan (the dialect spoken by Benigni) the "-accio" at the end of the word most of the time adds an affectionate tone to it. California viola ( talk) 05:48, 21 December 2008 (UTC) reply

Doesn't "Wojtylaccio" just mean "little Wojtyla"? Judith M-S ( talk) 13:29, 4 December 2011 (UTC) reply
Nope, it would be -uccio, not -accio.-- Carnby ( talk) 14:35, 16 March 2014 (UTC) reply

Asterix and Obelix take on Caesar

Benigni also was one of the main characters in Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar as Detritus, a corrupted Roman tax collector who wants to kill the Caesar and claim the throne of the Roman Empire.

I watched the movie a few years ago, recognized Benigni's face, and saw his name in the opening credits. Gotta watch the movie, it's so funny and cool XDDD 201.128.248.147 09:15, 17 December 2005 (UTC) reply

Hi, I'm an italian boy and I wanted to say that Roberto never used the expression "Woytilaccio" to insult the pope, because in Florence and in Toscana they use the "-accio" to express love, while in the rest of Italy "-accio" has a negative connotation (for example: "ragazzaccio" means "bad boy").

Son of the Pink Panther'

Roberto Benigni was also the son of the pink panther in The Son of the Pink Panther.

The problem is the Filmography section seems to be listing mostly the films he directed. However, there are several movies listed (including The Son of the Pink Panther) that he acted in but did not direct. Filmography should either include all of his films (30 as actor and 9 as director) or should be restricted to the films he directed and say that explicitly, so somebody like me doesn't come along and add Down by Law. Writer

Surprised it was ommitted, I added "writer" to the first line.

Also, doesn't he share writing credits with Cerami for La Vita è bella? See first line of "Life is Beautiful and beyond" section.

Religion

The source given for the statement "he still considers himself a believer" does not appear to include that; it appears that he is talking about concepts, rather. I remember reading a collection of essays that said he is an atheist and have been able to track it down online: link. What should we do? Karin Anker ( talk) 04:58, 15 July 2014 (UTC) reply

I removed the statement because I wasn't able to find a clear declaration about his religious stance.-- Carnby ( talk) 22:54, 18 July 2020 (UTC) reply

"Holocaust" not mentioned

Benigni's character did not tell his son that "the Holocaust is an elaborate game". There was no reference to what is now called the Holocaust. He told his son the reason they were in a work camp was because of the imagined game. There is a difference. Royalcourtier ( talk) 23:08, 1 December 2014 (UTC) reply

Name in IPA

Seems like the double ɲ in the last name is incorrect and unpronounceable. I think there shold only be a single one. Gil_mo ( talk) 21:50, 8 April 2021 (UTC) reply

[ɲ] is always doubled when occurring between vowels. See Italian phonology#Consonants. Compare e.g. Bologna, Sardinia, Lasagne. Nardog ( talk) 15:34, 11 April 2021 (UTC) reply
Indeed I see the same IPA is used for your examples. However, since ɲ is pronounced "ny", won't it become "Bolonynya", "Sardinynya", etc.? Gil_mo ( talk) 05:29, 12 April 2021 (UTC) reply
Ny is just an approximation for people who don't have [ɲ] in their native languages. [ ɲ is essentially [n] except the tongue closure is made further back in the mouth. It can be prolonged just as [n] or [m]. Nardog ( talk) 20:42, 12 April 2021 (UTC) reply
