The name is pretty obviously cognate with Thames and probably does have to do with darkness. I'd be happier if someone with knowledge of Celtic languages could attest that there is something like it in, say, Welsh. Sanskrit tamas is used in Buddhist and Hindu (and probably Jain) philosophy to signify the darkness of ignorance. So there is some chance the name is pre-Celtic.
