I listed him as the father of Thomas and William, based on the U.S Conress Bioguide [1] which shows them as brothers. But, the dates and place of birth don't fit. I'm sure that Thomas was Rawlins' son, but I don't think Mattherw is. Needs research.... Lou I 21:52, 31 May 2004 (UTC)
Yes, Lou. One of the sources for him is (I think) the SC Biographical Directory (or something along those lines - I can't find my relevant source note naming it for some reason: my lousy filing) which is NOT always a desperately reliable source, however nicely it may have been printed and bound. A more carefully worked through source is one of those little family genealogy books by George Bigelow Chase, Genealogist 1835 - 1902, entitled Lowndes of South Carolina 1876, (Published Boston Mass, USA in 1876 by A Williams & Company), Page 12. You never quite know with these family genealogy books, but this one apears to me relatively careful and honest. Anyhow, if you google 'Rawlins Lowndes' you get to 'my' genealogy page on the Lowndes family in South Carolina which summarises my understanding of how the genealogy works.
I've not come across any son called Matthew. Also Matthew wasn't, as far as I can see, a family name for these Lowndess at this time.
But by his second wife, Mary Cartwright ? - 1772, Rawlins Lowndes begat Thomas Lowndes 1766 - 1843 who himself had a reasonably prominent political career.
By his third wife, young Sarah Jones 1757 - 1801, Rawlins Lowndes begat William Jones Lowndes 1782 - 1822 who also had a political career, cut short by his early death. He died at sea and I have a note that his widow throughout her life always remembered the noise of his body being thrown into the sea. More than you wanted to know?
I'm not sure what happens if one enters links to these talk pages, but try this...

The article states that Lowndes returned to the General Assembly in 1778, just in time to debate the new US Constitution. This is clearly impossible, as the Convention did not take place until 1787. Was this just a transposition typo? That seems inconsistent with the later dates of his service.
