I think it is generally recognised, as a convention at least, that the Second World War started in the late Summer/early Autumn of 1939, regardless of the entry of other nations into the conflict. In the same way the First World War started in July/August 1914. Therefore, implying that WWII started with the entry of the USA (as in this article) is a commonly repeated error.
