Distance

From which source is the distance of RV Tauri? Imho 38 ly is much too close. A yellow supergiant in this distance would be much, much brighter than 9.8.

Assuming an absolute magnitude at max of -4.0 (fairly typical for RV Tau stars) and 1.0 magnitude of dimming due to interstellar absorbtion (just a guess) gives approximate distance of 6000 pc or 20000 ly. The figure of 38 ly is definitely wrong (I suspect that it actually refers to one of the bright stars in Taurus and has been applied to RV by mistake). - TristramBrelstaff 22:38, 6 December 2006 (UTC) reply
