In both this article and the article on Portative organs the first sentence states that they are Medieval instruments, whereas the New Grove makes it clear that they are also contemporary terms
I would suggest a reformatting, first addressing current use, and then discussing them historically, perhaps also treating their historical function (fill in parts in choral pieces in the Renaissance, continuo in the Baroque, use in double organ pieces). Makemi 23:09, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
