More editing is required by someone who might know more about the port. I tried to fix what I could, but I did not want to get rid of too much information that could be relevant.

I know. I've done a bit of editing although admittedly I do not know much about the history of the port. However, I assume the sentence The port of Pescara was conceived mainly as a staging area for use by numerous local fishing fleets, which had laid the foundations in the river in the second half of 800. was written (translated?) by a native Italian speaker, so I changed it a bit, particularly the 800 to 19th century since otherwise it appears to be nonsensical (cf. also Italian wp-article.) --
