Have whales done this before? Do they keep doing this?

No. I don't even believe this instance. There are a few whales that sank ships/boats in the 19th century, e.g. the Essex (1820) and Ann Alexander (1851), and there is Mocha Dick, though there's no evidence the latter actually existed, just hearsay from a single magazine article and newspapers written by hacks.
