I have read in this article that the average failure rate is around 10% which - also mentioned - is still considered "normal" for consumer electronics. However - even for a console with an optical drive this is quite high. The paragraph about reliability is linked to souces, but the wording sounds a bit like a press statement from Sony. It should be reworded more neutral, my suggestion would be to remove statements like "this is still normal" and let the reader decide himself. Personally i believe the figures are even higher as mathematically for the "pre-slim" models the figures can only go up. The high number of "Yellow light of death" failures appearing after the warranty coverage runs out has even lead to a whole "YLOD fixing" industry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.189.154.87 ( talk) 23:22, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

When I try to download the article as PDF, I get the following message: "WARNING: Article could not be rendered - ouputting plain text. Potential causes of the problem are: (a) a bug in the pdf-writer software (b) problematic Mediawiki markup (c) table is too wide"

As far as I can tell the only problem with the PS3 table is the width - when the boxes are put on separate rows it works fine but it only just fits. It also works fine if you remove one of the other columns but leave the multi-tier features section as-is, since that also reduces the width. I've had a look at 2009 in video gaming, but I can't seem to get it to work (although I fixed some issues). Alphathon™ ( talk) 00:58, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

The article mentions the running of unsigned code on the PS3 using the hacking methods by fail0verflow. This is wrong. It should say signed code instead. As you may be aware, the private keys are now public and anybody can sign software and run it on the PS3, hence the term signed code. Games, updates, homebrew, you name it.

On January 8th 2011, George Hotz aka Geohot (famed iPhone hacker) has released a dongle free "Jailbreak" [1]for the Playstation 3. With his "Jailbroken" firmware, it adds an option to install .pkg files, in return which is homebrew for the Playstation 3. A long with the Jailbreak, he has released a set of tools that will enable anyone to sign their own applications as if they were Sony. A repository set up to put all of the 3.55 signed applications has been put in place [2]

In the first sentence under the Slim Model section heading it reads, "The redesigned, slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 (commonly referred to as the "PS3 Slim" and officially branded "PS3") is currently the only model in production. It features an upgradeable 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB or 320 GB hard drive and is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% (CECH-20xx) or 45% (CECH-21xx) less power than the previous model, or one third of the original PS3 model." 34-45% less power is not one third of the power use of the original PS3. The judicial-system is a broad term and would include requirements for copyright law and publishing of such information on a site that clearly has their own rules established. Your issue is not really about whether or not an WP editor would be good or bad belonging to the "judicial system" or with censoring "everything" as you put it, but rather more about you overlooking all current law and statutes in order for you to publish *anything* you want regardless of law. As the one who tagged the lead (AFAIR), I noticed the almost-edit-war on the subject. I don't have time to look at your changes in detail, but thankfully you both provided edit summaries (and I comment only on them). I'm with Alphathon, the issue is not length (although that could be an issue if it's too long compared to the article, this was not what I tagged), but that the lead is meant to stand by itself as a mini-version of the article. The main issue (what initially prompted me to add a tag) was that the recent LG thing got too much weight; a case of recentism. In addition I noticed that the rest of the lead also didn't summarize, but provided quite a bit of detail that would overwhelm the casual reader, possibly distracting from the broad subjects of the article. So if the LG think has been removed or reduced, you can remove that part from the reason parameter of the tag, and once it is a lead like MOS likes it, you can remove the tag entirely. Since you have differing opinions, it is probably best to leave the tag until you have consensus. All PlayStation 3 consoles can play DSD discs which are SACD's mastered on DVD discs. Many sites distributing these discs say that you can get the 2.8224MHz audio sample rate from the analog audio output on the MULTI AV port ONLY, and other outputs will downsample it. Sony is attempting to bury the Yellow Light of Death because they deny the fault exists. Also used the link given above (at top of page) in diff, so I removed it [7] - the link also mentions (looking forward) the possibility of Sony reducing cost by removing the backwards compatability functionality quote " One candidate for elimination in a future revision of the PS3, says iSuppli's Rassweiler, is a $27 Toshiba graphics chip designed to facilitate compatibility with older games from the PS2. Recently, lots of blogs and forums have been talking about the Red Light of Death, which generally is described to be this problem: -PS3 suddenly turns off followed by a blinking red light... -The user isn't able to control the PS3's on and off function using the controller( you can only restart the ps3 by manually turning it off and then on again) The issue generally happens with the 1st and 2nd generation ps3s, but other cases have been mentioned. Also, the issue doesn't happen on a regular basis, and some reasons for it are said to be an overheating problem. I personally have had that problem and it only happens when playing certain games (For me it was Uncharted 2). I'm guessing the issue is usually with games that take up much of the PS3's processing power, however that's just from personal experience. Maybe we can find some reliable sources for the problem and some fixing options? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZombyPiggie ( talk • contribs) 23:33, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
This just rather makes me curious, since sales figures for the game have never been released. Gran Turismo 5, on the other hand, is the greatest selling game to have a sales figure (7.3 Million as of January 2012.), and would thus make more sense to list it since there's a sales figure to show how much it has sold. Black Ops, doesn't have a sales figure that shows it sold more than GT5's 7.3 million. What do you think?

Since the programs are the foundation created for the PlayStation 2, those they engage in a first via a USB without interactions, then some time later, a USB driver will use them more easily. Ps3 sales reach 77 million in December 2012

The article says that the sales pf the PS3 were 70.2 millions of units as September 30, 2012. This information came from two sites of the official web page of Sony Computer Entertainment.
The first one says that the sales of the PS3 from 2006 to 2011 were 63.9 millions of units: (
"PlayStation®3 Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales (Unit: million)". {{

: Unknown parameter |editorial=

The second one says that the sales of Hardware in the year 2012 (until the second quarter of the year) were 6.3 millions of units: (
"Computer Entertainment System Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales (Unit: Million)". {{
cite web}}
: Unknown parameter |editorial=

The information on Wikipedia came from the two sources united. My problem is on the second source. It doesn't says that the sales are only for the PS3. It may seems obvious. However later in a new of Sony Computer Entertainment says that as November 4, 2012 the sales are 70 millions of units [9].
The fact that the second source is not only of PS3 may seems logic if we see the number of sales of the first and second quarter. They are quite high, don't they?
Finally I want to apologize if my English in not that good since it's my second language. -- Andresisrael ( talk) 16:24, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Within the "System unit" subsection within the "Console configurations" section, it says that various (hard drive) sizes up to 500 GB have been made available, but the sources cited for that claim ( http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/100706ae.html, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/white-ps3-slim-out-in-japan-this-month) do not mention the 500 GB hard drive sizes; the largest sizes they mention are the 320 GB hard drives. I'm not questioning that 500 GB hard drive PS3s exist; I would just prefer that the part of the article that claims that the PS3 with the 500 GB hard drives have been made available actually cites one or more sources that actually support that claim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.111.86.106 ( talk) 10:15, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

As for Linux Support, I believe even the newer Slim versions *do* support Linux by either Jailbreak or other means. Every single PS3 console does support Linux as long as you take the right software steps, as can be heard from PSGroove's 3-part video conference which is covered over 3 episodes on YouTube. Here's the first part where they claim this (Note, please do playback from 3:02): "PSGroove 2010 Console Hacking (Part 1)" on YouTube.
At 3:25, he points out the Linux support being possible on Slim. Please see the video's description for the other 2 parts if you are interested in more details. I hope this is relevant to the article :)

The coprocessors must have an instruction set -what is that ?
This is now evident as - PS4 will move to the ubiquitous 80x86 CPU family..
- Why 80x86 ? future proof. Able to leverage the cpu to gpu interfaces and the gpu's already being developed for 80x86, which will be a long lasting produt... they may make CPU and GPU upgrades a possibility... why doesnt the PS have a bus for plugging in modules , like a GPU card..
They are kicking themselves that they didnt make the PS family more like a PC in a console... Windows 8 for PS4 or PS5.. why not hey ? Microsoft cannot stop them . If they run 80x86 cpu, Jailbreakers WILL run Virtualisation .. (VmWare style layers..) and run Windows... - — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.242.170.18 ( talk • contribs) 01:51, 23 December 2012

The system has Bluetooth 2.0 (with support for up to seven Bluetooth devices), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and HDMI 1.4 built in on all currently shipping models.
This ship has sailed. But the sentence seems accurate even without "on all currently shipping models"; perhaps it was written to account for future models instead of to differentiate from older models. I noticed that in the "Media" section of the main infobox that it says the Slim/Super Slim can play Video CDs, while the Wikipedia page for Video CDs (specifically, right here) mentions that the PlayStation 3 cannot play VCDs due to the lack of an MPEG-1 encoder.

As far as I can tell the only problem with the PS3 table is the width - when the boxes are put on separate rows it works fine but it only just fits. It also works fine if you remove one of the other columns but leave the multi-tier features section as-is, since that also reduces the width.

Ifcaro, a Spanish hacker later propose a program to launch copies of PlayStation 2 games from an external hard drive. This technique will be the first to run homebrew on the PS3. Sony have added special firmware updates to the PS3 to enable support the PS Vita, including allowing data transfer, sharing licensing between PS3 and PS Vita versions (download one format, get another for free). It also have remote play options similar to the PSP functionality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.109.169.137 ( talk) 01:09, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Shouldn't the article be updated to reflect that PlayStation 3's current System software version has been updated to version 4.30 ( Source)? Furthermore, the article states "In the UK, the 500 GB model was released on September 28, 2012, while the 12 GB model will be available from October 12, 2012". The "will be available from October 12, 2012" is outdated and should be updated as we have passed that date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.111.86.106 ( talk) 13:50, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Currently the PS2, PS3, PSP and PSVita cannot be officially bought "retail" in China, however many people in China still own them and in most cases they are sold by resellers in the black market, with consoles coming in from North America, Europe and Hong Kong. The ban on domestic retail sales might be lifted after the PS3 has received official government certifications. -- 李博杰 | — Talk contribs email 17:48, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
A few weeks ago the lv0 key set are leaked by Three Musketeers, now scene devs are able to create CFW that is higher than 3.55. I think this new info should be added, maybe even as part of the Rebug CFW info. Also, the Rebug doesn't allow full debug capabilities, but DEX fw does. Ps3 sales reach 77 million in December 2012

The article says that the sales pf the PS3 were 70.2 millions of units as September 30, 2012. This information came from two sites of the official web page of Sony Computer Entertainment.
The first one says that the sales of the PS3 from 2006 to 2011 were 63.9 millions of units: (
"PlayStation®3 Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales (Unit: million)". {{

The second one says that the sales of Hardware in the year 2012 (until the second quarter of the year) were 6.3 millions of units: (
"Computer Entertainment System Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales (Unit: Million)". {{

For ref 39: "PlayStation3 Crowd Gets More Than It Bargained for in Tysons". WTOP News. November 17, 2006. Retrieved November 17, 2006. I work for WTOP. Predecessors purged all articles previous to about 2009 some time ago (I believe around 2013 or so...) This is a dead link using an old, outdated link structure, and I can't even do a redirect because of the aforementioned purge of the articles - this article doesn't even exits anymore. Can it be removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ultravibe ( talk • contribs) 14:51, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
The section Technical specifications currently states:
The system has Bluetooth 2.0 (with support for up to seven Bluetooth devices), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and HDMI 1.4 built in on all currently shipping models.
This ship has sailed. But the sentence seems accurate even without "on all currently shipping models"; perhaps it was written to account for future models instead of to differentiate from older models. So I removed the phrase. Not being completely sure, I'm noting this here for other editors. Digital Brains ( talk) 09:58, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Last line in paragraph on supercomputing states "As built the Condor Cluster was the 33rd largest supercomputer in the world and would be used to analyze high definition satellite imagery." suggested changes are "As" to "Once" & add comma after word "built". template. "As built" is different in meaning from "Once built". "As built" refers to a specific configuration at a point in time. "Once built" refers to a continuing time period. The comma is optional in this usage because the phrase is not clearly a parenthetical or a subordinate clause.

Change "On March 22, 2007, SCE and Stanford University released the Folding@home software for PlayStation 3. This program allows PS3 owners to lend the computing power of their consoles to help study the process of protein folding for disease research." to "On March 22, 2007, SCE and Stanford University released the Folding@home software for PlayStation 3. I have a Super Slim but lack any VCDs, so if possible, could someone test to see if VCDs work on the Slim/Super Slim and update it accordingly? — Preceding unsigned comment added by A32bitmint ( talk • contribs) 20:16, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Believe me, ever since my PS2 broke and I wanted to play its games like R&C Deadlocked or BF1, it would never run them. Who said that it ran them? Leather Daddy Lenin ( talk) 15:31, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Only very specific early models of the PS3 fat can run PS2 games. I believe they removed PS2 compatibility before the PS3 slim, so only a few early PS3 models can play PS2 games Oikoopa ( talk) 14:28, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

I think we should add "PlayStation 3 is the last PlayStation which can read CD", since starting from PS4, PlayStation cannot read CD and spewing "Unknown Disc" error Beezanteeum ( talk) 16:06, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
