Retitle and move to Piñon, Colorado

During the recent AfD, part of the discussion involved a suggestion to rename and move this article from Piñon, Montrose County to Piñon, Colorado, the correct name per WP's standard naming conventions, and per the fact there is no other town or city named Piñon in Colorado.

Because I'm fairly confident this would be an uncontroversial move, and don't think there will be a technical barrier to doing so, and I don't believe it is required to open a formal move request. There is an admin backlog for requested moves, and so I'm opening this more informal talk page discussion.

Also courtesy pinging @ Liz, the admin that closed the AfD after it was withdrawn to keep her in the loop of communication. Any additional page watchers or interested editors are welcome to comment here. – Netherzone ( talk) 15:37, 15 June 2024 (UTC) reply

  • Support: I think most people agree that Piñon is the COMMONNAME. Seeing as no other Piñons existed in Colorado, referencing the county goes outside the norm for article names, especially the county without the state. See Netherzone's comments on my talk page for extended content. ~ Pbritti ( talk) 16:25, 15 June 2024 (UTC) reply

  • File:Pinon townsite on the San Miguel River, looking south.png was published in 1980; do we have any evidence it was also published earlier? If not it's not in the public domain. Similarly, what's the first publication date of the other two images? Both come from historical societies and may not have been published before appearing on those websites.

Before continuing, I had a look at the contributions to this article and I see that The Nuggeteer is not the main author of the article. Per this note, drive-by nominations can be removed. This doesn't quite qualify for automatic removal, but it would have been better to discuss this on the talk page first. Netherzone, you're the main author; are you OK with this nomination continuing or would you prefer it be removed? Mike Christie ( talk - contribs - library) 17:17, 8 July 2024 (UTC) reply

See User talk:TheNuggeteer/Archive 4, there is a message there, I could also slip a note to Netherzone if you want. 🍗TheNugg eteer🍗 23:12, 8 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Thank you for the ping and the message on my talk page, Mike. I'm confused why TheNuggeteer thinks they should get the credit for this as a GA since it was I who "saved" it from deletion, did over 80% of the work and all the research on it.
While I enjoy improving articles/stubs, this doesn't really seem "fair." Although I am not a competitive person by nature, it's not really an incentive for me to make such improvements if someone else gets the credit.
@ TheNuggeteer, I had left you a message on your talk page about this but never answered. Why do you believe that your work earned this? Netherzone ( talk) 08:34, 11 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Given that Netherzone doesn't feel this is fair, I'm going to fail this nomination. Normally I would just remove the nomination, but there is one query above (about the images) which might be useful to editors of this article, so rather than delete this page I'll fail it so those notes are still visible to the editors of the page. TheNuggeteer, please restrict yourself to nominating articles that you have done significan work on yourself, and please check with other major editors of the articles before you nominate further GAs. Thanks Mike, I think this is best. I'm still looking into where I found the 1906 date. It's been a while, but I'm thinking I probably followed the photo caption to the archives of either the Colorado Historical Society archives or the State archives or one of the local museum archives. If I can't find it again to re-verify the date, I'll ask for the image to be deleted. Netherzone ( talk) 13:57, 11 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Future GA?

Netherzone, you mentioned being unfamiliar with GA; if you decide you'd like to try nominating this yourself I'd be glad to give you advice as you go through the process. Mike Christie ( talk - contribs - library) 13:36, 11 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Thank you @ Mike Christie for this offer. I may take you up on it once my time frees up.
And good news on the image date in the Denver Public Library Digital Collections - the exact creation date of the photo is July 16, 1897, so it is clearly out of copyright. See link to the image and date here: [1]. I will update the info on the image file, correcting the date and adding the name of the photographer. I must have gotten the 1906 date from a news article published in 1906. I learned a lesson...never assume! Netherzone ( talk) 14:16, 11 July 2024 (UTC) reply
