Pelican feeding her young

I suspect that the pelican atop the egg may have pierced her own breast and is feeding her young with her own blood. This is an old heraldic device usually called "a pelican in her piety." [1] [2] As the article says, it is symbolic of taking great care for one's young. It is also a Christian symbol of charity.
