The anal canal is lined with mucous cells — mucosa. At the top are columnar cells similar to those of the rectum. At the bottom are flat squamous cells. In between, there are transitional cube-like cells. The boundary between the transitional cells and the squamous cells is called the pectinate line. This is where most of the anal glands empty into the anus. American cancer society
