I question the description that he was "Irish". He was born in Ireland but he came from a family of Church of England vicars in Suffolk. His father was the principal of a Belfast School at the time of his birth but was certainly not Irish. I suggest "British" would be more accurate. That was certainly his nationality. I've reverted this and added a source from a reputable website that is prominent in search history. In the absence of an source verifying that he rejects the idea of being Irish, then it should be left as Irish. His religion is not relevant to whether he was Irish or not.
