Also, the first elected legislature in the New World was not in Massachusetts. It was the Virginia House of Burgesses (1619) which predates even the founding of either the Plymouth or Massachusetts Bay colonies (the antecedents to the present-day state of Massachusetts.) —Preceding

It is too simplistic to call these 'symbols of the British Monarchy'. Yes, they are heraldic symbols, and therefore used in monarchic coats of arms. However, their significance is far broader, representing the constituent Anglo-Saxon and Celtic traditions, respectively, of the United Kingdom. 92.29.33.26 ( talk) 18:37, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
