According to Jane's, the prototype was called the Mg 23 and the production aircraft the Mg 23 SL, first flying in 1955 and 1962 respectively. The clear implication is that there were no production aircraft between 1955 and 1962. In the absence of citable evidence to the contrary, and the general reliability of Jane's, I've gone with that. However, 7 years seems a long development time and that worries me. There is some evidence to support the idea of Mg 23 production in that period. Perhaps the strongest is from the US registered Mg 23, N6729C, which was registered in 1958 (so not an SL) with cn 007. Less strong is from three Austrian registrations, not dated but noted as Musger Mg 23s (all Mg 23s and 23 SLs on the Partington list are under Musger)), not Mg 23 SLs, with cns 005, 006 and 008. The 23/23SL labels may not be reliable and we don't get the registration dates, but these data together suggest that the first 8 aircraft were Mg 23s. cn 009 is down as a Mg 23 SL.
Does anyone have citable evidence for or against this case? TSRL ( talk) 11:28, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Interesting! Where did you find these? Any associated dates? TSRL ( talk) 13:29, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Maybe he found this List in Issue 46 of "Blätter für Technikgeschichte", published by Vienna's technical Museum. This Issue is devoted to Erwin Musgers aircraft and motorcycle designs. Zaungast8 ( talk) 07:20, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
What we need is a citable source that puts the total production as 26; at present this number is unsupported. Jane's may well be wrong but we need citable evidence. TSRL ( talk) 13:48, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
There is more on the Mg23 and Oberlerchner in a couple of later Jane's. Next time I'm in my local library I'll dig them out; they may well just be repeats of the 1966/7 piece but they might have picked up an error. TSRL ( talk) 17:37, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
