Note: Others may differ, but I believe the photo is not of the Passage staff (though there certainly are staff members in the shot, including most notably Frank Kathman, the paper's founder, the tall mustachiod, long-haired guy in the upper right), but of a number of counter-cultural/"hippie" types living in and around the Fairhaven district in Bellingham. Since these diverse, friendly folks constituted a good share of our regular readers in 1969, the cover shot seemed to be a statement of loving pride in our growing "freak" community. -- Bernie Weiner (Passage staff 1969-71)
