Can we be sure there will be a by-election? How late could the general election be put off before a by-election would have to be called? This could be clarified in Monday's papers. PatGallacher ( talk) 23:36, 27 December 2009 (UTC) reply

I doesn't look like a by-election has to be called at all, and given the political atmosphere almost certainly won't be. From [1]: "There is a convention that the [by-election] writ should be moved within about three months of the seat becoming vacant, but this is not a statutory or parliamentary requirement." We'd have to wait until the end of the recess, then give them the standard 3 weeks of campaiging. So the earliest it could be really is the beginning of February....would they even bother? 86.3.119.165 ( talk) 22:58, 28 December 2009 (UTC) reply
I very much doubt it. It'd almost certainly be an easy Conservative gain, and the Government won't wish to increase Cameron's momentum further. Wereon ( talk) 18:56, 30 December 2009 (UTC) reply
