It is stated in the article that Niobe (then Morten Jensen) was built as a schooner and later (1922) rerigged as a barque when converted to a schoolship. In the photo from 1930 she doesn't seem to have a barque rig though: look at the mainsail, which seems to be a gaff sail. Somewhere on a German page I saw her described as a "jackass-barque", which I think is correct. In 1961, in a similar incident, the sailing school ship Albatross sank, killing 6. The 1996 film White Squall was based on this sinking.
The similarities are tenous and do not amount to making worthwhile noting here.
