My main source for this article is an article in the Sage Encyclopedia of Anthropology; unfortunately this is written in rather broken English (apparently untouched by editorial hands), and there are places where the meaning isn't wholly clear. I'll find other sources and return, but in the meantime other hands are of course welcome to correct any mistakes that have crept in as a result. --
