Newport is officially the home of the Army Ordinance Plant which was originally built in the early 40's to manufature ammunition for the U.S. Military during WWII. It then became the home of huge tanks that contained "Heavy Water" drawn from the nearby Wabash River and one of the main ingredients in the Hydrogen Bomb (H2O2) Knock off that extra O and you have a split molecule with a free floating O . Indiana did not have the political clout to keep the Hydrogen Plant and it was moved by rail to North Carolina in the late 40's. Although it is unclear whether nerve gas was ever produced in Newport, large containers of the troubled material is stored at the plant. It has finally has been put underground for safer storage. Scientists are still working on how to destroy the stuff safely. Incineration seems to be the leading method but still not sure about the biproducts and how to capture that and what to do with it. A mess in Newport. Air raid sirens all over the place. The "Plant" encompasses a huge parcel of ground which the government has rented back to local farmers for grazing land and farming. If the "official" activities are ever finished it is wondered what will happen to the land which was bought from locals via eminent domain back in the 30's.
