I presume that there was some need for this, and so a way was found to make one; rather than finding a boxful of nanodumbbells cheap on eBay, and then wondering what to do with them.

Andy? Because it's there. It goes like this: Make it there. Now that it's there, make it do something extreme. Examples: cars, nuclear bombs, etc.
