Overall: New enough, long enough, no copyvio concerns or issues with sources. I don't love the first hook, and while the others work, they don't quite do it for me. Without putting words in your mouth, I wonder if it's possible to make something of the fact a Selfridges telephonist began a career as a peace activist during the Suez Crisis?

DrThneed: Thanks for the suggestion. Taking into mind that the source is unclear on whether or not she was still at Selfridges when she joined the UNA-UK (she could've quit before the Suez Crisis), I have proposed two more alt hooks (people will be more familiar with the international, more common "telephone operator" than with strictly-British "telephonist"):
