Hi Smokefoot, I thought that the history section gives a more generally understandable access to the topic, at least for non-chemists; this is why I put it to the top. Furthermore I believe that the Isolobal principle allows a better understanding of some metal carbonyl structures. Hi Smokefoot, Wolfgang A. Herrmann called this in a review article about metal carbonyls (W. A. Herrmann: 100 Jahre Metallcarbonyle. In: Chemie in unserer Zeit. 1988, 22. Jahrg., Nr. 4, ISSN 0009-2851, pp. 113–122) a "legendary reaction discovered by Reppe" (W. Reppe, 0. Schlichting, K. Klager and T. Toepel. Cyclisierende Polymesrisation des Acetylens. New research has resulted in successful syntheses of Ca, Sr and Ba carbonyls that utilise d orbitals in defiance of common main group theory. I think this is notable enough to include in the page. However, it's not my area of expertise so I would like to defer to a specialist to explain it properly.

The article currently says "As part of their experiments the group treated nickel with carbon monoxide." ("They" includes Ludwig Mond.) But I have read, in several places, that what happened was they were studying marsh-gas (a mixture of gases which includes carbon monoxide) in a vacuum chamber which had joinings made of nickel in its interior, and Mond noticed that those nickel parts were being eroded faster than normally, when marsh gas was used, and that is what prompted him to investigate further. I'm too tired right now to find a source, but I'm just mentioning it on the TALK page. HandsomeMrToad ( talk) 08:29, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
