Would someone clarify whether Memorial Day is used in place of Canada Day in Newfoundland & Labrador, or whether it is used in addition to it. Also, is Memorial Day observed only on the Monday closest to July 1, not on the First itself (when that date is not a Monday)? That would mean that Memorial Day is sometimes as early as June 28, and as late as July 4. Thanks. Yoho2001 ( talk) 15:03, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
---Both holidays are celebrated here, Canada Day more-so. If the holiday falls on the weekend then the following Monday is a paid holiday, but Memorial Day is celebrated on the 1st.
Also, Memorial Day is sometimes referred to as "Beaumont-Hamel Day"
I live in Newfoundland and not one of the dozen people I've asked today has ever heard of or celebrated this day, least of all in the morning in place of Canada day. The Canada Day events are always televised and highlighted on the news, most notably the sunrise citizenship ceremony at Signal Hill/Cabot Tower. They did lay wreaths at the war memorial in downtown St. John's but the local news stations made no mention nor distinction between Canada Day and 'Memorial Day'. I'm not saying some people aren't all about it, just that it's buried underneath the pomp and splendor that is our National Celebration. 174.116.71.90 ( talk) 20:50, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
