I'm redoing the article, to solve a few problems, such as that the lead should be a summary of the body but had (until my last edit) content not in the body. While discussing subjects allied with matriarchy is appropriate where they overlap or contrast, they should otherwise not be in the article, and I plan to move or delete content that is on other than matriarchy and not about comparison. I plan to look at the content on genderally equal treatment where it is not considered by a source as a form of matriarchy; where it is that, then it is probably within scope because of the sourcing being on matriarchy, but otherwise it probably does not belong. I plan to consider whether some of the content is well enough written and formatted or overlinked and to format citations for consistency. While in the past I had added content mainly to some sections, I typically left the rest of the article as other editors had written it; and responded to concerns largely on the basis of my work on the article, when other portions had other content to which I may not have paid enough attention. This seems to have led to misunderstanding (partly my fault) best resolved with fresh editing. This probably won't take me more than a week or two, and I'll probably do it not all at once but in stages, including overlapping stages. Nick Levinson ( talk) 16:55, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
@ Dougweller:, The lead is not exempt from citations nor from the verifiability policy. This is a common misconception. The parts which were tagged have been officially challenged and per WP:MINREF and WP:LEADCITE should be cited with an inline citation or they should be removed. I've noticed a lot of cases of weasel words. Another editor told me that a lot of the so-called "weasel words" are backed up by other inline citations inside the article, but to the reader, shouldn't there be inline citations for all the sections where there are weasel words? I have some examples which I will lay out (I will add more:
I will begin removing these, @ Nick Levinson: has already reverted one of my edits that removed 5, so I am asking him now, where are the sources for number 5 in the main body? 4 is the closest I've gotten to a reference in the main body, so I will start removing content that uses weasel words. As has been discussed before, matrifocality is not any kind of alternative or competitor to the concept of matriarchy. Matrifocality means that family structure is built around a core of women and their adult daughters and minor children, with men largely transient (only temporarily affiliated to families). It does not mean that women have the preponderance of power in the overall society, and therefore it is not synonymous with matriarchality or anything approaching the ordinary definition of matriarchality. I deleted a statement based on an article by Leacock when I couldn't figure out what the statement was supposed to say and what the article said relevant to that section. As a result, the section became empty and I deleted it. However, I found only the abstract and haven't looked in JStor, which may or may not have the full article. Unrelated bonobo females seemed to prefer each other's company to males. Unlike abused loner chimp females, it's likely that the bonobo gal gang prevents males from killing the babies of rival males (as other apes do) and allows females to choose their own mates and grab the best food. Removed the parenthetical "(linguistically, it is not a parallel term)". In the October 15 or 16, 2017, edit (citing both dates to allow time zone differences), two consecutive paragraphs were added, each ending with a citation. The citations say "Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 1990, The Hebrew Goddess, 3rd ed., Raphael Patai, pp. 38-39" and "op. cit., pp. 96-111" (both without quotation marks). Both paragraphs have similar subjects and both refer in their main texts to Patai, and Patai is also cited in the first citation. The first citation appears to cite a book. While Amazon has a sample from the book, it's from the Kindle version and not a print version, so searching by page numbers is impossible. But Google Books has the paginated version. The second citation is to pages that correspond to the pages that form chapter IV. While I have no expertise on the chapter's subject, it appears to me that the chapter's first paragraph suggests that the second Wikipedia paragraph is based on that chapter. Therefore, I think the second citation is based on the first citation and not on something elsewhere in the article or anything subsequently deleted. (URLs were accessed Mar. 15–16, 2018.) Since the second citation uses "op. cit." and Wikipedia discourages using it, I am editing the second citation to more explicitly tie it to the first citation by adding the Patai work to the Bibliography and editing both citations to rely on the Bibliography. Is a comprehensive treatise of demographic history largely devoted to the histories and geographical distribution of matrilineal and matrilocal societies, complete with the latest maps and all. Surprised to see no mention of this here. See also "A Convergence of Civilisations" by same author which has a whole chapter on South East Asian matriarchy (which includes a lot more than the Minangkabau...) and its relation with Buddhism and Islam.
