The current article cites the destruction of Mathrafal (Mathraval) Castle at the hands of Llewelyn ap Iowerth during disputes between Gwynedd and Powys. Among other historians, Robert Owen, in his article entitled "Welsh Pool and Powys-Land", attributes the razing of the castle to John, "in order that Mathraval should at no future time fall into the hands of the native princes". See "Montgomeryshire Collections, Vol. xxix, pp. 241" for detail. What do you think?
