I've removed the signature from this article and added the stub tags again. I also added a "tone" tag at the top because this article needs to conform with WP:MOS among other things. It also needs proper category tags. Robotman 1974 03:27, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
There appear to be several variant ways of spelling the name. The page has already been moved once because of this. I'm in no position to say which is correct, but I've restored the name to match the title of the article. I think any alternate spellings should be included in the article, and if a more appropriate title can be agreed upon, the page can be moved via WP:RM. Robotman 1974 17:33, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
The essay that has been contributed is good but needs to be condensed. It is a great resource but not something that would be found in an encyclopedia.-- Cbc1010 ( talk) 01:21, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Can anyone improve the birth and death dates with proper sources? There seems to be a variety of unsourced nonsense dates given in various versions 1920, 1620 etc Where does the 1698 death date come from? Letterofmarque ( talk) 17:00, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
A deleted paragraph claimed that da Costa was from the Benin Empire, then went on an irrelevant aside summarizing the history of the Empire. It was an unsourced claim. If anyone has a reliable source for this will reinstate. 2601:80:C100:210:1CC5:39CB:2FE7:5543 ( talk) 18:57, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Mathieu Da Costa was NOT Canadian by any standart. Nationality : an ethnic group forming a part of one or more political nations. . Except that the Canadian identity didn't exist until the 1800s, 200 years after Da Costa died. I can't see most of the sources ( Book, under maintenance ), but if anything, Da Costa would have been considered a Canadien , which modern's equivalent is Québécois. As Québec ( Or at the time, Canada ) is legally and by definition a nation, he isn't Canadian. In name, it's the same thing ( Canada and Canadian ), but in reality, it's VERY different. That's like giving a Northern Irish a British nationality, even if he was born 1100 ( Ireland wasn't united yet , and there are other problems with this comparison, but you get my point )
Or, even, in fact, he wouldn't have been considered any of these because he wasn't born in the New World and only lived about 1/3rd of his life in it ( And not even the most important time where your culture is mostly printed upon you : Childhood )
A lot of other claims are pretty false because of this. Claiming he is the first black man in Canada isn't really accurate too, as he was never in Canada. Pre War of Conquest Canada is NOT the same thing at all than post War of Conquest Canada ( Which will be separated in two and etc ... )
