Hello @ Epipelagic: I may have misunderstood the intent of
Most of these viruses are bacteriophages which infect and destroy marine bacteria and control the growth of phytoplankton at the base of the marine food web.
Are we certain that they exclusively destroy and are never biotrophic parasites? Is this sentence intended to be part of the viruses⇨carbon sequestration story? There are intervening sentences that make me uncertain. Perhaps
