When Hugo Chavez rose to power and shutdown the RCTV television station, she protested with other students as part of the movement for democracy.6
In 2008, when Atencio was 23 years old, she was assaulted by a man on a hiking trail because of rising violence in Venezuela.7 The attack, which she recounted in her book, led to her migrating to the United States on a scholarship from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she graduated with a Master's degree.5 10 years later, she received the First Decade Award from Columbia University for her work as a journalist.8
