Well, how about Holt, Regional History, North West, page 186?
One of the principal works on the line was the 295-yd tunnel at Farnworth, which was constructed for the double line. A separate parallel tunnel for Bolton-bound trains was opened on 5 December 1880 from which date the original tunnel has taken the up line only. The purpose of this work, unlikely as it now seems, was to provide sufficient clearance for Pullman cars which the Midland was proposing to run between Scotland and Manchester via Settle.
