The inflatable craze of the late 80s did indeed bring a much-needed added dash of fun and humour back into football support as an antidote to the dark days of hooliganism, and I've always liked the way Manchester City fans can laugh at themselves and their team as its mixed its triumphs with new, innovative ways of shooting itself in the foot (as befits a team whose celebrity fans included Les Dawson). As almost certainly the first to bring them along to matches in big numbers City fans deserve credit for popularising inflatables at the time to a wider audience, and certainly that was the point at which the media sat up and took notice, but without wanting to take anything away from them I wonder were they the first fans to bring inflatable bananas to a match and if so when? I only ask because I support Watford and remember us first taking an inflatable banana or two and a few of those giant hands with us to an FA Cup 5th round tie at Walsall in February 1987,and (although I was at Wembley for the occasion and I do not remember seeing one back then) I've just seen one to my surprise in a picture of our crowd at the 1984 FA Cup Final - two whole years before Imre Varadi joined City! I have to admit I thought it was because of the mostly unfair bad press we got from a lot of the national media in that era that they always wanted to credit someone else with being the first to do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.41.153.54 ( talk) 16:31, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
