Maybe someone who knows more about her can expand on this, so that it's not just a copy of the whitehouse.gov bio.
Two stories I've heard about her, and both may be apocryphal:
1. She spent her mornings in bed -- sometimes working from bed, but rarely got up until after noon.
2. She was responsible for racially integrating the annual Easter egg hunt at the White House.
Both the story about Mamie Eisenhower staying in bed for part of the day and the story about her integrating the annual Easter Egg Roll are true. See the biography her granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, wrote called Mrs. Ike.
Does anyone have any information about this bizarre nickname for their short-lived son Doud Dwight? I thought it was some kind of vandalism when I first saw it, but I found confirmation on other websites, though no explanation.
Oh wait, maybe it's supposed to be a cute take-off on "Ike", his father's nickname. If so, it sure didn't work for me! Bigmac31 ( talk) 20:39, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
24.17.192.70 ( talk) 19:11, 30 January 2015 (UTC) It was popular on the base; perhaps the connotation of 'ickiness' came later in our vernacular.
In the {{succession box}} for First Lady of the United States it lists
now. Shouldn't it display the name she was known by, while living in the white house? Something like
for example ?
That way, it would display as "
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy" (a name she was known by, while living in the white house) -- but it would still point to the same article, about the same person; that is, "
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis".
(right?)
Just a suggestion. --

Is there a source for the hyphen in "Mamie Geneva Doud-Eisenhower"? I have not seen it anywhere else. Jim ( talk) 20:35, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm not a Mamie scholar, so will defer to others interested in this subject, but there were a couple of omissions I thought I should point out in case others want to take them up in the article:
- Icky's death probably warrants a bigger section, as it loomed large in Dwight's life and it would be prudent to assume Mamie's as well. They never got over it, though reportedly past it. He sent her flowers on Icky's birthday each year, I believe. The scarlet fever (strep throat which progresses) was brought into the house by a housekeeper or babysitter that Ike hired, no doubt a source of guilt and problems. Icky's popularity around the base (I think he was a mascot of some kind, but it's hazy) is oft noted.
- Whether or not Ike slept with Kay S., the rumors took a toll on Mamie. Kay was 'photoshopped' (Airbrushed in the day, I presume) out of at least one photo so that Mamie wouldn't see it. I would make no -claim- of infidelity in her entry, but certainly the rumors during and after WW2 were painful, and if Kay's book came out during Mamie's lifetime (I'd have to verify) claiming the affair, perhaps a sentence on that?
- Authors vary on whether Mamie drank a lot or not. Defenders point to inner ear, though there's nothing but anecdotal evidence. Since the alcohol use is also anecdotal, perhaps a mention of both as possibilities. It's not bad now, though it reads like the inner ear was the reason and the alcohol but a rumor. I don't think it's that cut and dried.

In 2016, I contributed a new lede which ended: ‘On leaving the White House, she made clear her disapproval of the incoming Kennedys.’
This was reverted (18/4/16) by user 2600:1001:B01A:88DD:60DD:157B:9803:86B0. (I can't access his Talk Page, because he has currently been blocked for a year). In the main article, it says that this story had been repeated in several biographies. I think it is quite a significant event in White House history. Valetude ( talk) 18:19, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

I nominated Mamie Eisenhower for GA, but it was quick-passed. The subsequent discussion was unhelpful, so I feel it should be reassessed to confirm that it meets the standards or so I know what to fix if it does not. Thebiguglyalien ( talk) 08:26, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
