The number of personnel each country has sent for both military & civilian positions needs to be updated. I update the total for each section as provided on http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/missions/monuc/facts.html. Earthsound 22:41, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Article says that the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo was created by Resolution 1291 of the UN Security Council, on February 24, 2000. It seems to be false, because we can find, quite three months earlier, another resolution (1273, on November 30, 1999, see French version of the resolution, item 4.) which seems to prove that the mission was already existing, and maybe earlier more (but without any official name approved by the Security Council). It's pretty tricky tracking the troop numbers. Although they are contained in the UN Secretary General's reports back to UN Security Council, they're a pain to dig out. Anyhow, added UN Infobox, per the UN Portal's "to do" list, which down the line could make updating that kind of figure a little easier. Tlongers ( talk) 07:43, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I think the page might benefit from being split into separate pages for MONUC and MONUSCO, given the changes in mandate, strategy, tactics and force structure. This would obviously require some pretty serious expansion. Be interested to hear others' thoughts. -- Scrooge ( talk) 12:38, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

I read with interest the point that says: "Between 21 and 29 August, heavy fighting outside Goma left 57 rebels, 10–23 government soldiers, 14 civilians and one Tanzanian U.N. peacekeeper dead. 720 government soldiers and 10 U.N. peacekeepers were also wounded.[46][47][48][49]" I have NO IDEA what the source is for the rebel casualties, as I was on the ground then as part of the FIB. There is no way that there were only 57 rebel casualties. Our estimates exceed that number wounded and in the various rebel field hospitals, never mind how many had been killed directly. MONUSCO → United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – Long it may seem, but it was recently moved to the current title by just one "support" vote, excluding the nominator's. One person suggested using both the proposed and the current title. The closing administrator missed that and didn't relist it. As for claims of being "commonly used", the whole proposed name must have been used by the press most of the time instead of (pronounced mohn-nuhs-ko). I don't know; maybe authors and/or editors must have copied and pasted the whole long title. Besides commonality, not an average reader would type either title. Who else here knows what "MONUSCO" is already? George Ho ( talk) 09:06, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
