In comic books (at least in the original Gold Key series), Brain was depicted as being a genius, in contrast with his personality on television.

Benny the Ball: “Right Hand Man”?
I can’t say that the description of Benny the Ball as TC’s “right hand man” in any way reflects the character in the series. He occupies the same position in the “gang” as Pvt. Doberman (Maurice Gosfield’s character on The Phil Silvers Show), a slow, well-meaning, but ultimately ineffective dreamer, who is looked after by the others, and acts as a sort of mascot - he’s nobody’s right hand man!
