From Sir Francis Leopold McClintock <-- to his proper name --> Sir Francis Leopold M'Clintock. There is no "c" in his surname. This is evident in numerous geographical locations in Canada itself named after him, and it's not McClintock Island or Channel! Franklin Researcher 18:49, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

This official British government website article outlines how Scottish clan names have variant spellings. The use of Mc or M' or Mac is mostly interchangeable and means essentially the same thing. Many Scottish families' names are spelt in different ways in different historical documents. To argue that McClintock is one or the other is not relevant to his biographical detail but to a more general article elsewhere about the malleable spelling of written language generally and specifically surnames.
