"Cranach probably drew on input from his lifelong friend Martin Luther" - is input the right word here. It implies he consulted which I cant picture.

Yes, Noble says "in consultation with"... the "probably" is a hedge from other sources who hedge.

This role for religious art contrasted with pre-Reformation art of the recent past, such as Early Netherlandish and Italian Renaissance painting - Confused by "this role"; ie that that art actually played, or now how the Luther now saw it.
