Because he took sides in a political dispute during an election, which is quite unusual. It's also demonstrates his attachment to an issue mush on the pope's mind. Similarly, the French church has been dealing with sexual abuse, so his views on that matter. Most of his other views are probably unremarkable, but something make come to our attention.
You've also misunderstood the meaning of cherry-picking. If this were are article about immigration and we included only arguments against and not argument in favor, that would be cherry-picking. That's about balancing sources. Balancing. You seem to be questioning significance, which I've answered.

…does he? The article used as a source only mentions his desire to use friendlier wording. It offers very little substance to back up this claim, and so I don’t really think it’s a tenable argument.
