The former is in fact a common spelling error in Icelandic. The correct spelling is Laugavegur. There are, however, two major places in Iceland called Laugavegur, but I am sure that the one currently described in the
Laugarvegur article (a hiking trail) will be a much more popular topic on Wikipedia than the other (a shopping street in Reykjavík), which I have moved from its original place at
Laugavegur to
Laugavegur (Reykjavík).
