1. Who is in charge of LandWarNet?
Short answer - the Army. From there, each organization/agency within the Army plays a role i.e. the CIO G6 as the network architect, the HQDA G3 concerning operational priorities, the HQDA G8 concerning acquisition, TRADOC (ARCIC) concerning warfighter capabilities enabled by the network, etc. In summary, its a combined effort within the Army with everyone playing a key role in what the military calls the Doctrine, Organization, Training, Materiel, Leadership, Personnel and Facilities (DOTMLPF) development for LandWarNet.

2. So who in the Army has a major role (authority/responsibility) in developing LandWarNet?
Hands down - the Army CIO/G6.

3. Is WIN-T a part of LandWarNet?
Yes.

4. Is FCS a part of LandWarNet?
Yes - but this question is similar to asking someone if they are a part of the "Verizon network." The key point in answering this question is that "LandWarNet enables FCS Battle Command." LandWarNet is also referred too as the "common network" supporting FCS. Footnote - the FCS Program was cancelled in 2009.

5. Is Joint Network Node (JNN) a part of LandWarNet?
Yes.

6. Are SINCGARS and EPLRS a part of LandWarNet?
Yes.

7. Are the boundary lines for LandWarNet clearly distinct?
Yes - if you know what to look for i.e. Army owned and Army leased networked "pipes" make up LandWarNet.

8. Does the Army see LandWarNet like Skynet in the old Terminator movies?
No - concerning a network totally managed by an artificial neural network. Yes - concerning network efficiency and the ability to enable the "shock and awe" effect when needed. See FCS.

9. Are there more definitions out there on LandWarNet?
Yes - in a discussion or draft form...but not official or approved. Keeping in mind the current definition has evolved substantially since LandWarNet's inception i.e. shift in meaning from tactical Army networks to all Army networks... its quite possible the definition of LandWarNet may continue to expand in meaning and scope.

10. Is there a LandWarNet Charter out there?
Yes - signed by the ARCIC Director (previously called the Futures Center Director) back in June 2005.

11. Is it possible to use "LandWarNet" hardware with "FORCEnet" software on an Air Force Network (C2 Constellation)?
Yes - but not a likely situation. The bill-payer for such an arrangement would be an issue.

12. Is LandWarNet an acronym for "Land Warrior Network?"
No, although the idea was entertained early in 2004, there was concern "LandWarNet" used as an acronym would cause confusion with another effort called the Land Warrior program.In the end, LandWarNet remained a name vice an acronym.

13. Is LandWarNet a "Program of Record?"
No - LandWarNet is NOT what the military calls a "program of record (POR)" i.e. a specific program (such as WIN-T) with a funding line.

14. TRADOC is mentioned often in addressing LandWarNet capabilties. What tool or process supports their analysis?
Short answer - the CNA (Capabilities Needs Assessment) process. The CNA assists the Army's future force development process by (1) identifying Army requirements to support Joint required capabilities, (2) assessing how the programmed Doctrine, Organization, Training, Materiel, Leadership and Education, Personnel and Facilities (DOTMLPF) solutions support the Army requirements that were identified, and (3) identifying capability gaps.

15. Heard TRADOC had a two day workshop (June 2007) discussing LandWarNet "concept of operations." Anything insightful come out of this?
Short answer - Yes. The workshop...or LandWarNet ROC Drill...directly contributed to the development of the LandWarNet CONOPS.

16. Heard the U.S. Army (TRADOC?) has a LandWarNet "Concepts of Operations" out for review. Is it available to the public?
Yes. The LandWarNet CONOPs was signed by LTG Vane (ARCIC Director) on 11 Feb 2008.

17. Can you give a brief history who led the LandWarNet effort in TRADOC?
Yes. 2003-2004: COL W. McKeown (Futures Center, BCAD) – Became the TRADOC lead for the LandWarNet idea/concept. 2004-2005: COL M. Vinson (Future Centers, BCAD) – Established LandWarNet forum i.e. council or colonels and senior general officer board of directors; produced LandWarNet Charter; produced LandWarNet Information paper. 2005-2006: COL J. Henderson (ARCIC, BCAD) – initiated a new office: LandWarNet Division. 2006-2008: COL M. Bradley (ARCIC, LWN Div) – produced LandWarNet Concept of Operations (CONOPS).

18. Do you know who in TRADOC has the institutional knowledge for the LandWarNet effort?
Yes, two folks are still there at this point since it's inception: Mark Farmer and Riley Hensly.

19. When's the next big LandWarNet event?
The AFCEA LandWarNet Conferencedown in Florida, Aug 18-20, 2009.

20. Is there a vison statement for LandWarNet?
Yes. Per the Army CIO/G-6, "the LandWarNet Visionis to provide operational capabilities to the Warfighter during all six Joint Operational Phases. To meet the Warfighters’ operational requirements the CIO/G-6 in collaboration with HQDA Staff, Army Commands, Army Service Component Commands, Direct Reporting Units, United States Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard will provide LandWarNet operational capabilities and LandWarNet institutional infrastructure in support of the Warfighter and the core business processes that support the Warfighter."

21. Heard there was a LandWarNet Info Pamphlet out.

22. How important is architecture to LandWarNet?
Very important. The Army CIO/G-6 addresses Information Technology Architecture as their role and reponsibility.
